To day I went to Hall's bluff to attend the sale of the _____ of Herndon's estate, and purchased some articles. The river is in good boatable order and rising. at home Albert is still clearing. weather cloudy with light rain nearly all day.
Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

YAZOO DEMOCRAT [Yazoo City, MS], February 11, 1860, p. 3, c. 1. St. Valentine's Day will be next Tuesday. We would remind the young folks that is the day upon which, it is said, that birds mate and if we are not mistaken, it was on this day that the "stars" first sang together. We would also remind our lady friends that this is Leap Year, and if any of them want to mate us, we promise them we will not "climb a tree from them." After this announcement, we expect to receive at least a dozen Valentines, by way of opening negotiations. Any number of the most elegant kind can be found at the store of our friends, Compton & Thomas.
