Tuesday, February 21st, 1865


To day I repaired the mill machinery when Hicks ground 8 bushels of corn & 5 bushels of wheat. John worked in the garden. James Roberts, Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] & little Major [James Hall Sharp] rode down to Mother's [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] & remained down there. Weather cloudy & cool with occasional showers of rain throughout the day.


*This Nellie is a 2nd great-grandma to the Keeper of this family history blog. Mahala a 3rd great-grandma, and is Nellie's mother-in-law. Mahala is also the step-mother as well as the mother-in-law to JMH.

Monday, February 20th, 1865


To day I rode my horse Rob in company with James Roberts to Crockett and back and while there I paid Mr. Douglass the assessor & Collector my state & County taxes, which amounted to $235. Hicks done nothing in consequence of the mill machinery getting out of running order. Weather cloudy and cold with a rain at night.

Sunday, February 19th, 1865


To day I am engaged in writing up this note book. Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] & little Major [James Hall Sharp] with James Roberts came up and spent the day. Nellie remained & Roberts returned to Mother's [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts]. Weather variable and pleasant.

Saturday, February 18th, 1865


To day John is at work in the garden. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] finished planting her potatoes. Hicks ground 41 bushels of corn. I set out about 25 young peach trees. Weather clear & pleasant.

Friday, February 17th, 1865


To day we are all at work on the mill and after getting it repaired, Hicks ground 9 bushels of corn and 2 bushels of wheat. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] is at work gardening and planted out her irish potatoes. I worked a little in the shop & repaired the little woman's rocking chair. James Roberts came up and commenced making me a raw hide lariet or lasso. he returned to Father's [Joshua James Hall] in the evening. Weather clear & cool with a hard frost at night.

Thursday, February 16th, 1865


To day John is at work on the levee. James Roberts, Mother [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts], & Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] came up and Roberts left for Crockett. Col. John Smith & 3 soldiers stopped for dinner. Mother & Nellie left for home. Hicks ground 11 bushels of wheat & 10 bushels of corn. Weather clear & rather warm for the season.

Wednesday, February 15th, 1865


To day John is engaged hauling wood. I finished repairing my saddle. James Roberts, Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire], Burt [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] & Toby [Horace Oscar Hall] all left for Mother's [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts]. Hicks ground 27 bushels of corn. At night Capt. McCown & 2 other soldiers stopped with me. Weather clear and pleasant.
