Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.
To day the steamer Ruthven arrived bringing some considerable freight, and I am busy in the ware house with the boys storing the same away. In the evening the steamer left for Galveston and Capt. James Wrigley* left on her in as big a drunk as ever I have heretofore seen him. Business dull. weather clear & pleasant.
*Wrigley had just buried his brother, John, on the 9th.
To day I went up town to get barberized, and then spent the residue of the day at home with the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] & boy[?]. weather clear & pleasant.
To day James Wrigley & myself went up town to attend the elections for field officers of the 5th Regt. and also to Muster & drill company "A" of said Regt. I being a candidate for the Coloncy had to play the amiable finely, after the polls were closed and I was elected I got on a little tight, but very gently. weather clear & pleasant.
To day I am busily engaged in making out accounts in the office. the boys are still in the swamp getting timber for my fence. weather changeable and cool.
To day the steamer Ruthven arrived from Galveston bringing up but little freight. I am engaged in making out accounts. But little done in the way of business. Alexandrien* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire], who had been staying at my house, left for her Mother's [Elizabeth* Lemaire Beall nee Waring]. Capt. James A. Scruggs & Company arrived from Polk County and quartered at the ware house. The boys are still in the woods getting posts. weather changeable & warm with drizzling rain, and at night a very hard rain.
*This Alexandrien is a 2nd great-grandma to the Keeper of this family history blog. Her Mother, Elizabeth, is a 3rd great-grandma.
To day I am busy in the store working on accounts with but little business doing. The boys are still getting out posts. I made Charley bed out all the sweet potato seed. weather changeable & rather warm with occasional showers of rain.
