Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.
To day I am busy working on the war tax rolls. The steamer Ruthven arrived from Galveston with but little freight. Sam* [Samuel Houston Sharp] is engaged in the ware house. The boys are at work on the fence. at night I was compelled to turn out on patrol duty. weather cloudy and a very hard rain throughout the night.

To day I went to town to drill the Malitia. In the evening I worked on the war tax rolls. The Boys finished putting up one string of fencing. weather changeable & warm.
To day we are still at work on the war tax rolls. Sam* [Samuel Houston Sharp] is busy making out a/c's. I sent the wagons down to Swilley's after corn and got 45 bushels which was all put into Capt. J. Wrigley's crib. Bill at work on the fence. The steamer Ruthven left for Galveston. weather changeable and warm.

To day Sam Mather came to see me and remained for dinner. Capt. McCardle's company of infantry arrived from Polk Co. in route for Houston & left on the Cars at night. I commenced working on the war tax rolls for Charley Lund. Boys engaged on the fence still & will complete it some time through out the year. weather cloudy & showery.
