Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Saturday, January 12th, 1861
To day I sent Bill down for the oxen to haul fire wood, he made 2 loads. Frank Stewart came up and went hunting. grinding small, only 2½ bushels. weather cloudy & cold.
Three years ago today . . . The Gazette says that John S Beale, formerly of Liberty county, committed suicide by taking strychnine some three weeks ago in Montgomery county. Galveston News, January 12, 1858 [This John Beale is the 2nd husband of my 3rd great-grandma, Elizabeth Lemaire Beale nee Waring. vle]
