Saturday, September 8th, 1866

To day I am at work at the warehouse. In the evening I drove up town in my buggy with my horse Charley working in order to try him. The boys finished chopping white oak blocks. Hicks went to [still?] and upon his return he had a hard chill & fever. Capt. Redman left on his pony and rode out in the Country and remained all night. Dr. Tarleton and wife are still here. Weather cloudy and hot with occasional showers of rain and a severe storm at night attended with a flood of rain.

Friday, August 17th, 1866

To day I worked at the warehouse. Col. Wrigley and family arrived on the cars from Houston. Capt. John W. Redman is still with me. I received by the cars my horse Charley which I purchased when I was last in Galveston and for which I paid 250$ besides the stall and expense bills which amounted to $31.50. Weather cloudy & hot with a hard rain in the evening. Ther: 90°.

Wednesday, July 25th, 1866

To day we are still in Galveston and stopping at Capt. Peacock's. In the evening I purchased a match horse for Rob for which I paid 250$. I drove out to the beach with Capt. Peacock in order to try my new horse Charley. The transport Clinton arrived in port with several cases of cholera on board. Weather variable & hot. Ther: 91°.

Monday, October 2nd, 1865


To day I remained at home, writing up this note book. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] is still doing her own house work. Col. James Wrigley dismissed his former slaves Charley and Rose for impertenance. I loaned my revolver to James Wrigley to go out to Mr. Minter's for the purpose of arresting said Minter on a charge of an assault to commit murder on the person of Mr. Lacour. The party went but were unsuccessful. Weather clear and cool.

Saturday, August 12th, 1865

To day I drove up to the cars in company with Col. Jim Wrigley, and waited until the Beaumont train arrived. Negro man Charley went to the mill for me & carried 2½ bushels of corn. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] had another fever. Jemima also had another fever. Wolf was taken sick with fever and in consequence I became my own ?. The Steamer Col. Stell left for Galveston. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 92°.

Friday, July 25th, 1862

To day the Steamer Ruthven arrived from Galveston, but in consequence of the low stage of the water in the river she was compelled to land at the lower landing. I am busy with Charley & Bob weighing cotton and in attending to the ware house. Bill is at work at Mr. Meyer's house & Bob also worked there in the evening. Sam Sharp & Charley Lund are attending in the office. weather clear & hot. Ther: 98°.

Wednesday, July 16th, 1862

To day I am engaged in the office. The steamer Ruthven arrived from and departed for Galveston. The boys are at work for the Corporation in getting out timber for the convent bridge and in hauling the same. Charley & Sleepy are still at work pulling fodder. I purchased from Jack McKim 54 lbs. bacon. Lieut. E.L. Jones left on the cars for Houston in route for Camp Waul. weather changeable & hot, with a shower of rain at night. Ther. 90°.

Wednesday, July 15th, 1862

To day I am busily engaged with the boys and little wagon in moving my furniture back home from the river. I have put them all back in the position it all occupied before my little woman left for the up Country [i.e., Houston County]. Charley & Sleepy are busy pulling fodder. In the evening I went to the office. weather changeable, with occasionally light showers of rain throughout the day. Ther: 84°.

To day the steamer Ruthven arrived from Galveston with a few passengers but no freight. I purchased 280 Pughes from Jim Rodger's negro man Charley. I took dinner with Grand Ma, and in the evening am engaged in writing. weather clear & very hot. Ther. 98°.

Tuesday, July 1st, 1862

To day I am busy in the office making out war tax roles for Charley Lund. The boys are engaged in hauling the jail timber from the swamp to the jail building. The other boys (i.e., Bob & Charley) are busy working out the potatoes. weather clear & hot. Ther: at 98°.

To day the Steamer Ruthven arrived from Galveston, with most of the old Liberty Guards, who were on yesterday regularly mustered out of the service of the Confederate States. No business doing. Boys at work on the fence. Charley working in the corn. weather cloudy & warm with strong prospects of rain.

Thursday, February 27th, 1862


To day the steamer Ruthven arrived from Galveston with some little freight. I am engaged in the ware house storing it away. I sent Charley to the mill & processed 7 Bushels of meal for the Liberty Guards. The other boys commenced to work on the fence to enclose my house. weather clear & warm.
