Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Wednesday, January 31st, 1866
To day Lelia & Ed. Jones arrived home from Houston. Hicks & Albert assisted Col. Wrigley on the school house. Mrs. Massie is still here. Frank [Stewart] & Burt [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] still sick. Weather variable & unpleasant. Thus I close my notes for the month of January.

Thursday, January 25th, 1866
To day the boys went out and got some Mulberry trees and set them out around the house yard. I drove up town in the buggy with the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] and while there purchased some articles for which I paid 12$ specie. Pet [Florence Mahala Hall] is some better. Frank [Stewart] & Burt [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] are still sick. Jimmy [James Wrigley Hall] had a chill & fever. I loaned Frank Stewart two dollars and fifty cents. Lelia left on the Cars for Houston in Company with Mrs. Perkins. Weather clear and pleasant but cold at night with a frost.

To day I went to Crockett in company with Mrs. Wrigley in the buggy. Lelia & Bob riding on horse back, they being in route for Liberty. I returned to Father's in the evening after having seen Mrs. Wrigley safely started on her journey. expenses at Crockett to Mrs. Wrigley 5$. incidentals 7$. weather changeable and hot.

To day I rode down to the bluff with Lelia, Roberta & Laura, we returned by the bottom route which was very pleasant & shady. Nellie was taken sick and remained so all day. In Crockett Mr. Craft was killed by Mr. Edwards but it produced no excitement whatsoever. weather changeable and very warm.

To day all the folks at home are still sick, with the addition of Lelia, Louisa & Bob. Mrs. Lund gave us a call at the store and spent some time in the office which to us made the time pass very agreeably. But little business. weather clear & hot with the Ther. at 89°
