Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

To day I am at work at the warehouse. Col. Wrigley received a load of lumber from Beaumont to build a school house with. Hicks & Albert set out some more trees, and hauled some lumber from the cars to the school house. They also hauled some palings for Mrs. Beale* [Elizabeth Lemaire Beale nee Waring]. Frank [Stewart], Burt [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] & Jimmy [James Wrigley Hall] are still sick. Weather clear & pleasant, but cold at night with another frost.
*This Mrs. Beale is a 3rd great-grandma to the Keeper of this family history blog.

To day I am at work at the store house. The train from Beaumont brought over the lumber to build the Cotton shed, and in the evening the wagons hauled it down to the river. Frank Stewart and Roberta [Downes Halyard nee Hall] are both quite sick, do not improve any. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] drove up town after a few articles. Mrs. Lund came over and spent the evening with the little woman. I purchased two shoats, for which I paid 5$ specie. Weather changeable with drizzling rain.

To day Hicks hauled the rails and lumber from the flat boat also the two skiffs or bateaux. I drove up town and Collected a part of the freight bills for the Str. Kate. Roberta [Downes Halyard nee Hall] is but little if any better with her afflictions. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] & I drove up town & purchased some Crockery, 1 Doz. apples and oranges. Weather variable and rather warm for the season.

To day the boys are still at work on the mill forebay floor. John & I took the little wagon and drove up to the King house and tore down the little smoke house and brought the lumber home to fix the floor of the forebay. Capt. Stubblefield and Mr. Reagan came up from Hall's bluff and went fishing in the mill pond but with rather poor success. Billy Stewart's wagon came out from Crockett and by it I received from him 43½ lbs. of Sugar. Fannie missed her fever. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 93°.

To day Bill is still at work thrashing out wheat. Father [Joshua James Hall] & Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] left for Magnolia. Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] rode down to Mother's and remained there to take care of the children during their absence. I rode down to the Tanner house to see if I could procure any lumber. The children still have the chills & fevers. Weather variable and warm. Ther: 84°.

To day I am busy in the office. Charley Lund commenced to post up our commercial books. Bill is engaged in making an axle tree for my little wagon, which was broken down on yesterday. Jack McKim is busy with his wagon in hauling the lumber from the cars to the wharf under my contract. The Steamer Ruthven arrived from and departed for Galveston having brought no freight. weather cloudy with occasional showers & a pretty good rain at night. Ther: 98°.

To day I look to myself in order to take a little more active exercise. In the morning I went out hunting and killed 2 squirrels. In the evening Frank Hitchcock and I went up the river in a bateaux as far as Rodger's place, where we purchased some eggs, and then returned. Bill & Mazaline commenced with my little wagon to haul lumber from the cars to the wharf, and in hauling the 4th load broke my wagon down. So it goes! and so passed my days amusement. weather changeable with a north wind blowing, but still very hot. Ther: at 97°.
