Saturday, August 4th, 1866

To day in the forenoon I worked at the warehouse. In the evening I drove up town in company with Col. Wrigley to attend the meeting of the City Counsil. Ed. Jones and Grand Ma Gayle left on the [rail]cars for Houston. Capt. John W. Redmond is still with me. Prescott Pickett the son of Col. E.B. Pickett departed this life, aged about 17 years. Weather cloudy and hot. Ther : 87°.

Wednesday, July 4th, 1866

To day I am at work at the warehouse. Hicks still hauling lumber from the flat boats. Florence [aka Pet aka Fawn aka Florence Mahala Hall] had fever all day, indeed the fever has not cooled off of her since she contracted it. Col. Wrigley and the hands are still at work on the wood shop. I rode up town on the wagon to attend a meeting of the City Council. Weather variable and hot. Ther : 90°.

Tuesday, June 26th, 1866

To day I attended a meeting of the City Council at which we passed several sanitary ordinances in order to protect the citizens of Liberty against the small pox which disease is now prevalent in the City. In the evening George Gordon and Henry P. Angell came over from West Liberty having walked nearly the entire distance, and being pretty well broken down. Mr. Gordon stopped with Col. Wrigley and Mr. Angell put up with me. At night I attended a party at Col. Wrigley's residence which was quite a gay affair. We danced until about 3 O'clock in the morn. Every thing passing off to the entire satisfaction of all concerned. The hands are still at work on the salt shed. Weather variable and hot. Ther : 92°.

Monday, June 25th, 1866

To day I worked at the warehouse until dinner, loading and making out freight bills for the Str. Royal Arch, in order that she may leave for Galveston, which she done in the evening. I drove up town and attended the election for State and County officers. I also attended a session of the City council. I am still suffering with Cough and the itch. Roberta [Downes Halyard nee Hall] had a fever, which lasted nearly all day. Weather clear and hot. Ther : 90°.

Saturday, May 19th, 1866

To day I worked at the warehouse in the forenoon. In the evening I walked up town in company with Col. Wrigley in order to attend a meeting of the City Counsil, which did not meet however in consequence of a very hard rain, which lasted all the evening. Capt. John W. Redmond finished putting on the second coat of paint on the house. Hicks is engaged hauling cotton from the cars to the warehouse. Weather variable and pleasant, after the rain.

Monday, February 19th, 1866


To day I assisted in discharging the Steamer Indian No. 2. She then dropped down the river to the wood yard. In the evening I drove up town and attended the meeting of the City Council. Capt. John Redmond is still here. Frank [Stewart] is no better. The children are still afflicted with sore eyes. My Cough no better. Weather cloudy & cold with a frost at night.

To day I am still at work at the warehouse. Col. Billy Stewart & H. Ballinger came down from Crockett. Billy Stewart put up with me. Negro man Ike did not work today. In the evening I went up town to attend a meeting of the City Council. Weather variable and cool.

Saturday, August 19th, 1865

To day the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] again missed her fever, and I now think she has entirely recovered from her late indisposition. I went up town to attend a meeting of the City Council and was by said Council elected Mayor of the City of Liberty. after a full organization & election of all city officers, the Council adjourned until the next regular meeting. I purchased from Mr. Bristley one pound of candles at fifty cents, and for which I yet owe him. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 92°.

Saturday, August 16th, 1862

To day being the regular meeting of the City Council of Course I had to attend being the Mayor of the City [i.e., of Liberty], and the time having expired for which each member was elected, the Council ordered a new election to be held on the first Monday in September next for seven trustees or aldermen for the City out of which number the mayor has to be elected. Sam Sharp & Charley Lund are busy making out the rolls of Assessment for the County. The boys worked on the fence in the forenoon and in the evening I gave them holliday. weather changeable & very hot. Ther: 97°.
