Wednesday, August 23rd, 1865

To day I walked up town to try a negro boy, who broke into the store of Mr. Skinner, but the parties not being able to identify the negro under arrest as the one who committed the offence, I discharged the negro. In the evening Mr. Trowell, Perkins & Cameron came over to my house and amused themselves playing whist. The Steamer Ruthven arrived from Galveston, and is now engaged taking on board lumber for the U.S. Government. Weather clear and hot. Ther: 94°.

Friday, December 5th, 1862


To day I done nothing in the way of packing up my furniture in consequence of the continued sickness of Bob. I went up town and loafed around the stores. weather clear but cold with a strong North wind blowing and a severe frost at night.

To day I am at work in the ware house. No business doing at the store. The boys are at work on my fence. weather clear & warm. The [Trinity] river all over the wharf.

To day I am engaged at the store. Sam* [Samuel Houston Sharp] making out a/c's. The boys are still at work on my fence with some prospect of finishing. weather cloudy, warm & showery.

To day I am loafing around the store, with nothing doing. I sent the boys up to Charley Lund's to fix the bridge at his residence. weather clear and pleasant but rather cool at night.

To day the Steamer Ruthven arrived from Galveston with but little freight. I am busy making out the war tax rolls for Charley Lund. Sam* [Samuel Houston Sharp] is now attending the Store & warehouse. Boys at work on the fence making some little progress. weather changeable and rather warm.

To day I am busy at the store. Capt. James A. Scruggs and Company left on the cars for Houston. Bill at work on the fence. weather clear & cool.

To day I am at the store with but little business doing. The boys are at work on the fence around my house. The steamer has not arrived as yet. weather clear & cold with a frost at night.

To day the steamer Ruthven arrived from Galveston with some little freight. I am busy in the store. The boys are still at work in the swamp getting posts. Mr. Patillo is working on the stable etc. weather cloudy, cold, occasional showers of rain & very disagreeable.

To day I am engaged in the store and also in the ware house; first attending the one and then the other. The boys are still at work in the swamp in getting out posts. weather clear & pleasant.

To day Charley Lund left for Hardin County thus leaving me all alone to attend to the store and the Ware house. But little business doing. Boys are at work in the swamp getting out posts. Mr. Patillo commenced building my stable barn & carriage house. weather cloudy cold with drizzling rain.

To day the steamer Ruthven left for Galveston, with Capt. Bolling on board. Carrie & her boy left on the cars for Houston. I am all alone at the ware house & Store. Charley Lund preparing to leave for Hardin County. But little business doing. Mr. Patillo finished my smoke house which is quite a nice one. weather cloudy and drizzling with a very hard rain at night.

To day I am busily engaged at the store. I started the boys into the swamp to get me some posts for my fence. weather cloudy rainy & very cold.

To day I am engaged at the store. In the evening I went up town for the purposes of signing the bond as security for Charley Lund who has been appointed collector of the war tax for the year 1861. weather clear & very pleasant.

To day I am engaged in the store as salesman with quite a retail business. In the evening I am employed in making out accounts. at night I was compelled to turn out to perform patrol service. weather clear, cool & a frost at night.

To day I am engaged in glazing and glazed 33 lights. In the evening I had to attend the store as salesman, Charley Lund having other fish to fry. weather cloudy and rainy.

To day I am engaged in the store. Mrs. Stanwood the consort of Dr. T.A. Stanwood died about 12 O'Clock M. Nothing doing on my house which is now progressing so slowly that I have almost dispared of ever getting it completed. Weather Cloudy and very disagreeable but rather warm.

To day I am engaged in the store. Henry Boothe a member of the Liberty Guards died at 9½ O'Clock a.m. at the residence of Charley Lund and in consequence of which he was prevented from attending to business. Nothing doing on my new house. weather changeable and unpleasant with a hard rain at night.
