Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Thursday, June 14th, 1866
To day I am at the warehouse in the morning at work. In the evening I remained at home and painted one shutter. The Str. Indian No. 2 came down the [Trinity] river and proceeded on her voyage to Galveston. I am still sick with the cough. Hicks, Montgomery and Ed are at work in the corn. Weather clear and hot. Ther : 90°.

Wednesday, June 13th, 1866
To day in the forenoon I worked at the warehouse. In the evening I remained at home and painted one shutter. Capt Dawson opened the black smith shop for public custom [sic]. Hicks & Montgomery are at work in the corn patch. Weather clear and hot. Ther : 88°.

Saturday, June 9th, 1866
The forenoon of to day I worked at the warehouse. The evening I spent at home and painted another shutter. The cars brought me from Beaumont 32,000 shingles, which Hicks is engaged hauling. I am yet suffering with the itch and cough. I however missed the fever again. Weather variable and hot. Ther : 86°.

Friday, June 8th, 1866
The forenoon of to day I worked at the warehouse. The evening I spent at home and painted another shutter. I took quinine all day and missed the fever. I am however suffering severely with the cough. Hicks is at work in the garden. The Str. Arizona came down the [Trinity] river and proceeded on her voyage to Galveston. Weather changeable and hot. Ther : 86°.

Thursday, June 7th, 1866
The forenoon of to day, I worked at the warehouse. In the evening I remained at home & painted one shutter, after which I had another fever in addition to my other diseasements. Hicks hauled bricks and sand to the black smith shop. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] hired a negro woman by the name of Ann, incumbered with two children. for her services as cook in addition to supporting her two children, she is to receive six dollars per month in specie, thus relieving the little woman from cooking. Weather variable and hot. Ther : 88°.

Friday, May 25th, 1866
To day I worked at the warehouse during the forenoon. In the evening I remained at home and painted another shutter to the little room. Mrs. Buckley and Johnny Wrigley arrived on the cars from Houston. Capt. John W. Redmond still here. At night I attended a party given at the Court house and remained there until late at night or rather early in the morning. Weather variable and warm with occasional showers of rain.

To day I worked at the warehouse during the forenoon. In the evening I remained at home and painted one shutter to the little room. I am still suffering with the itch. Capt. John W. Redmond is still here. Weather variable & warm with a tremendous rain which lasted for several hours.
