Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Thursday, July 6th, 1865
To day Mrs. Beale [Elizabeth Lemaire Beale nee Waring], let the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] have a cow & calf & sent several articles of furniture over to be taken care of. Billy Roberts left on his way for his house going by the way of Houston. Capt. Peacock came up on the Steamer Mary Hill from Galveston & stopped with me. Louisa is still sick. Weather variable & hot with occasional showers of rain. Ther: 86°.

To day Mrs. Beale* [Elizabeth Lemaire Beale nee Waring] came over from Danville and remained with the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] all night. Billy Roberts came over from Houston on the train and stopped with me. He did not pay me the money I loaned him in Houston. The little woman missed her fever. Louisa is still sick. Weather clear. To day I am at work getting things arranged in the house and putting the furniture up assisted by Frank Stewart & Billy Roberts and after partially arranging the house I moved my family over from Col. Wrigley's and can now say that we are once more at home. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 90°.

To day Billy Roberts arrived with the wagons all safe and sound without breaking any of the furniture. Hicks & John looking very well. My family are all still over at Col. Wrigleys. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 92°.

To day Billy Roberts left me at Mr. Carr's and drove my mule John home with him. I assisted Mr. Carr in loading his flat boat with cotton. Weather cloudy and cold with occasional showers of rain. at home Hicks ground 22 bushels of corn.

To day I left home on my mule John in company with Billy Roberts in route for Liberty. We rode to Crockett & stopped for dinner with Billy Stewart. We then rode down to Dan Dailey's where we stopped for the night. Weather cloudy & warm. at the mill Hicks ground 31 bushels of corn.

Saturday, April 1st, 1865
To day I left Crockett in company with Mr. Haden and drove in his buggy out to the mill and thence down to Father's [Joshua James Hall] where I let Mr. Haden have 15 B/C which weighed 7161 lbs for which he is to pay me 6¢ per lb. Mr. Driscol also went down with us & assisted in weighing the cotton. We then returned to the mill. I found the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] and Roberta [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] had gone to Crockett to see me but we took different roads & therefore missed each other. Billy Roberts rode over to Mr. Lacy's and found my mule that had escaped from Crockett and led him home. The little woman & Roberta returned home at night pretty well worn out from fatigue. Hicks ground 17 bushels of corn. Weather variable & pleasant. It clouded up at night however and rained hard nearly the whole night.

To day I left home in company with William Roberts & rode to Crockett where I stopped with Billy Stewart. Williams Roberts returned home. Hicks ground at the mill 27 bushels of corn. Weather variable & pleasant until night when it became very cold.

Monday, March 27th, 1865
To day Emily Peacock & Jane Milford left for their respective homes. Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] & William Roberts came home from Mother's [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] and the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] drove down the(re) and spent the night. My poor old horse Hawk after a lingering illness of several months laid down and died, he had been a faithful and serviceable horse to me while living, poor old horse. I regret his death but as all must die let him go. Weather clear and pleasant.

To day Billy Stewart and Billy Roberts went out hunting and killed a fine turkey. Father [Joshua James Hall] & Mr. Crow spent the day with us. John worked in the field. To day John is at work in the field. I worked on Mother's [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] loom. Hicks ground 34 bushels of corn. Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] drove my buggy & horse down to Mothers and brought little Jimmy [James Wrigley Hall] up home with her. he has been down there since Sunday last. Wm. Roberts came up & remained all night. Weather variable & pleasant.

To day John is at work around the house. Mrs. Lacy & Mrs. Wortham came out and spent the day. I let Mrs. Wortham have 10 lbs of flour at 6$ which she paid. James Roberts and his brother William left for the camp. Josephine [Josephine Martha Hall] had a fever. Hicks ground 10 bushels of wheat & 2½ bushels of corn. A soldier stopped all night. Weather variable, with a light shower of rain.

To day the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] rode up to Richard Pennington's and purchased 5 bushels of seed potatoes & one bushel of ? She then rode down to Mother's [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts]. John is engaged in bedding out the seed potatoes. In the evening the little woman returned from Mother's and James Roberts came up with her. He remained all night. Hicks ground 11 bushels of corn & 4½ bushels of wheat. I wrote a letter to J. Richardson at Austin. Weather variable and cold.

William came down from their command at Magnolia & stopped for the night. Hicks ground Mr. Boon's wheat & 4 bushels of corn. I finished Jimmy's shoes. Tubbs run away from the boat yard and came home. Weather cloudy and cold with occasional showers of rain.
