Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

To day I assisted in discharging the Steamer Indian No. 2. She then dropped down the river to the wood yard. In the evening I drove up town and attended the meeting of the City Council. Capt. John Redmond is still here. Frank [Stewart] is no better. The children are still afflicted with sore eyes. My Cough no better. Weather cloudy & cold with a frost at night.

To day the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] again missed her fever, and I now think she has entirely recovered from her late indisposition. I went up town to attend a meeting of the City Council and was by said Council elected Mayor of the City of Liberty. after a full organization & election of all city officers, the Council adjourned until the next regular meeting. I purchased from Mr. Bristley one pound of candles at fifty cents, and for which I yet owe him. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 92°.

To day I went up town and remained there pretty much the whole day expecting to attend a mass meeting of the people called for the purpose of devising ways & means to obstruct the mouth of the Trinity River in order to prevent the gun boats of our enemy ascending the same but from the luke warmness of the people no meeting was holden and every body appeared to be resigned to their fate if the enemy should come and take the village which does not at all seem improbable. weather changeable & cool.

To day I went up town and fully organized the Militia for the town beat, during the time the citizens held a large mass meeting and at said meeting I received the nomination for the colonelship of the 5th Regt. 3rd Brigade. Business very dull. Boys at work on my fence, weather clear, warm & very windy.
