Saturday, March 4th, 1865


To day John is at work on the fence. Mr. Hays came up from the boat yard and took Tubbs back with him. Mr. Boon, Mr. Grammar and James Roberts left for Crockett. Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] and Fannie rode down to Mother's [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] and spent the night there. Hicks ground 27 bushels of corn. Weather variable and cold with a hard frost and freeze at night.


*This Nellie is a 2nd great-grandma to the Keeper of this family history blog. Mahala is a 3rd great-grandma, and is Nellie's mother-in-law.

Friday, March 3rd, 1865


To day the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] & John worked in the garden. Mr. Boon & Mr. Grammar are still here. James Roberts and his Bro. William came down from their command at Magnolia & stopped for the night. Hicks ground Mr. Boon's wheat & 4 bushels of corn. I finished Jimmy's shoes. Tubbs run away from the boat yard and came home. Weather cloudy and cold with occasional showers of rain.

Wednesday, October 12th, 1864


To day after getting some leather from Mr. Prewitt, for which we had to leave the little wagon & Tubbs as it was not ready for delivery & will not be until to morrow, Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] & I left in the buggy for home where we arrived about sun down, too late for Mother to go home therefore she remained all night. John is at work hauling wood. Hicks ground 11 bushels of corn. At night Mr. Day remained with me. Weather clear & hot.

Tuesday, October 11th, 1864


To day Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] & I drove in the buggy up to the tan yard in order to get some leather, and have some shoes made. Tubbs with the little wagon & mules drove up with us hauling 18 beef hides. We were compelled to stop with Mr. Prewitt for the night. John is at work digging potatoes. Hicks ground 3 bushels of corn. Weather clear & very hot for the season of the year.

Monday, December 28th, 1863


To day Bill returned home from his visit across the river to Mrs. Tubbs. he brought with him the ox bell which had been stolen from the neck of my ox while he was running over there by one of Mr. Tubbs' negro boys. Fawn [Florence Mahala Hall] was quite sick. I remained about the house, writing up this note book. Weather clear & cold with a frost and freeze at night.

To day I remained at home writing up this journal or note book. Bill is still over the river on his visit to Mrs. Tubbs. Weather clear and cold with a hard frost and freeze at night.

Saturday, December 26th, 1863


To day I gave the boys holliday until Thursday next. I let Bill ride one of my mules across the river to see his old Mistress Mrs. Tubbs. Captain Peacock left for Magnolia. Sam* [Samuel Houston Sharp] made Fawn [Florence Mahala Hall] a pair of shoes. I ground 7 bushels of wheat. Burt* [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] is still here and has been for several days past. Weather cloudy & cold with showers of rain.

Tuesday, January 13th, 1863


To day Capt Peacock and Solomon Levy left on their buggy for Magnolia. The boys are still engaged in getting out and hauling garden posts. I ground 23½ bushels of corn. I received from Jesse Tubbs two loads of lint cotton, making the amount received from him 5244 lbs and I paid his son young Jesse the sum of $700 on a/c of said cotton. at night there was a perfect storm the rain fell in torrents making the Elk Hart creek nearly over flow its banks. it was indeed a very disagreeable & unpleasant night.

Saturday, January 10th, 1863


To day I sent the boys with the wagon to Mr. Renfro's after the fodder & peas I purchased from him some days ago. they made one load hauling 300 lbs of fodder and 8 bushels of peas. Sam* [Samuel Houston Sharp] rode Hawk over to see Mr. Keen to have some blacksmithing done but returned without accomplishing his mission. I ground 12½ bushels of corn. In the evening Jesse Tubbs sent one load of lint cotton over to me. I sent Bill with the mule & cart over the Trinity River after his clothing. I went down to Fathers [Joshua James Hall] in the evening and found all well. weather changeable & cool with a frost at night.

Wednesday, January 7th, 1863


To day I rode my horse Gladiator over the Trinity River to the residence of the late Elisha Tubbs for the purpose of attending the sale of his effects made by his Executor, and while there I purchased two yoke of oxen for which I paid $102.50. I also purchased an ox chain for 3$. I also purchased from Mr. McCord a likely yellow boy about 19 years old by the name of John or Squire, a slave for life and for whom I paid $1600. Sam Sharp* who had been heretofore drafted in the Militia left home on my horse Rob for the place of rendezvous at the Shilo Camp ground, but before he left he ground 14 bushels of corn. I returned home at night in Company with Father [Joshua James Hall] and Mr. McCord. weather clear & rather cool.
