To day I am busy in the Provost Marshal's office. Bill is at work on the fence, with a prospect of getting the garden fenced in some time. Capt. Frankland returned from Smith's point on my horse Rat. he seems somewhat jaded from his travel. weather clear & very hot. Ther: 99° being the hottest day of the summer so far, & I sincerely hope it will be no hotter. Thus I close the jottings for June.
Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Friday, June 27th, 1862
To day I am busy in the office. I loaned my horse Rat to Capt. Frankland to ride to Smith's point. The Steamer Ruthven arrived from and left for Galveston. The boys finished getting timber in the swamp for the County jail. Capt. James Wrigley, wife and son left on the cars for Camp Waul in Washington Co. weather clear & very hot. Ther: 96°.
