Monday, September 10th, 1866

To day I remained at the warehouse during the forenoon. In the evening I drove up town and while there settled in full with J.D. Skinner up to this date. I also purchased a few articles for the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp]. Capt. Redman returned from his visit to the Country in a state of intoxication, and was rather quarrelsome & abusive. Hicks & Ned are at work getting fire wood. Weather cloudy and hot with occasional showers of rain.

Saturday, September 1st, 1866


To day I am at work at the warehouse. Ned Smith worked part of the day assisting Hicks to pull the corn out of the little patch. Capt. Redman is still with me & is still quite sick. Jimmy [James Wrigley Hall] missed the fever. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] drove up town and purchased a few articles. Dr. Tarleton & family are still with me. Weather clear and hot.

Friday, August 3rd, 1866

To day I am at work at the warehouse. Capt. Redman is still with me. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] drove up town in the buggy after some articles. I am still afflicted with the itch. Hicks is still at work on the wagon shed. Weather cloudy & hot with occasional showers of rain. Ther : 86°.

Thursday, July 26th, 1866

To day we all left Galveston in route for home, and arrived in Houston about 10½ O'Clock A.M. and put up at the Eldorado Hotel. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] went out shopping and purchased a few articles. Weather variable and very hot. Ther : 92°.

To day Col. Wrigley & I are still in Galveston. I finished purchasing what articles I needed at home [in Liberty County]. We then attended to business generally. Weather cloudy and hot with rain throughout the entire day. Ther : 86°.

Friday, July 13th, 1866

To day Col. Wrigley and I are still in Galveston and still stopping at the Washington Hotel. I purchased several articles for home. In the evening I drove out on the beach in company with Dr. Stanwood, who told me of all his domestic difficulties. I also attended a party at Dr. Stanwood's residence at night in company with Col. Wrigley which passed off pleasantly. Weather cloudy & hot with occasional showers of rain. Ther : 88°.

Tuesday, March 27th, 1866


To day I sold my mules John & Riley to Henry E. Perkins for $300 specie. Col. Wrigley left on the train for Houston carrying with him 6 mules, 1 horse & 10 sks. corn. I drove up town with the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] to purchase some articles. Capt. John W. Redmond left for Houston on the cars. Weather changeable and cool.

Monday, March 12th, 1866


To day I am still in Galveston and at the Washington Hotel. The Str. Indian No. 2 arrived from Liberty with Capt. John W. Redmond on board as a passenger who left my house yesterday. I received a letter from the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] ordering some other things and in consequence of which I had to turn out and purchase them. I drove out on the beach with Dr. Stanwood. My cough is much improved. Weather variable & cool.

To day I am still at the Crawford house in Galveston. I have entirely finished purchasing what things I need for home. My Cough is much improved. I drove out to the beach with Dr. Stanwood and spent a pleasant time. Weather clear and very pleasant.

Friday, March 9th, 1866


To day I am still at the Crawford house in Galveston. I got all my purchases ready to ship by first steamer to Liberty. L.E. Downes is at work purchasing for the Crockett market and I wrote by him to Sam* H. Sharp in relation to my up Country [Houston County] business. Dr. Stanwood & I drove out on the beach and spent a pleasant afternoon. Weather clear and pleasant.

*This Sam is a 2nd great-grandpa to the Keeper of this family history blog.

To day I am still at the Crawford house in Galveston. My Cough is a little better. I purchased all the articles for which I had orders. In the evening I accompanied Dr. Stanwood in a beach drive & spent a pleasant afternoon. L.E. Downes arrived in Galveston direct from Crockett and put up with me at the Crawford house. Weather clear and pleasant.

To day I am still at the Crawford house in Galveston. My Cough is a little better. I drove around the City in Company with Dr. Stanwood. I purchased a few articles to go forward by the Str. Indian No. 2 to the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp]. I also purchased 2 pair fine gold spectacles, one pair for myself and the other pair for the little woman. Weather variable and cool.

To day I am so sorely afflicted with a cough and cold as to render me entirely unfit for business. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] and Mrs. Wrigley drove up town to purchase a few articles. Hicks is still at work on the school house for Col. Wrigley. Albert worked in the garden setting out onions. Mrs. Massie still here sewing for the little woman. Frank [Stewart] and Burt [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] are no better. Weather variable and cool.

Tuesday, January 30th, 1866


To day I am still at work at the warehouse. Col. Wrigley is still engaged in moving the Smith house. he succeeded in getting it up to the new location and blocking it up. Hicks and Albert assisted him all day. The sloop Gray Hound left for Galveston. I drove up town in company with the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp]. we purchased 20 oranges, apples, banannas & cocoa nuts. Jimmy [James Wrigley Hall] is better. Frank [Stewart] & Burt [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] are still sick. Weather clear and pleasant.

Wednesday, October 4th, 1865


To day I drove up town in my buggy and while there I purchased for the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] one hoop skirt @ 2½$ one belt @ 2$ ? lbs. cheese 80¢ 1 lb candy @ 50 cts. At night the little woman and I attended a dancing party given at the residence of Mr. A.B. Trowell. There was a large concourse of people in attendance and the amusements of the evening gave general satisfaction to all participating. In fact it was a brilliant affair, and reflected credit upon its projectors. Weather clear and pleasant.

To day I drove Mrs. Beale [Elizabeth Lemaire Beale nee Waring] up town and while there loaned her six dollars to purchase two pairs of shoes and one bottle of whiskey. She left sundry articles of furniture with us, for safe keeping. She then left on the train for West Liberty in route for Danville. Louisa is still sick. Weather variable & warm with occasional showers of rain. Ther: 86°.

Saturday, August 27th, 1864

To day the boys are at work at the mill. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] & I rode to Crockett in the buggy in order to procure a few articles. We stopped at Billy Stewart's and found him sick in bed. we were in the night driving home. Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] came up and assisted Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] in taking care of the children during our absence. Weather clear & very hot. Ther: 94°.

To day I am still in Houston and very busy in making and packing up the several small purchases of different articles sent for by me. I am getting very tired of remaining in Houston but as there is no way of leaving it for the present I must remain contented. at night Frank Hitchcock & myself again visited the Theatre in company. weather clear & hot. Ther: 90°.

Monday, June 1st, 1863


To day I am still in Houston and commenced making several little purchases for the various persons who sent by me for the same, and am very busy getting them together. Frank Hitchcock came down from Washington County to see me & with whom I spent a pleasant time. at night we visited the Theatre together. expenses of the day 15$. weather clear & very hot, as it is the first day of summer I shall commence keeping the stage of the Thermometer, which I contemplate keeping up throughout the entire summer. at 3 P.M. (and at this hour for the season I shall always note) it reached in the shade 90°.
