Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Monday, May 14th, 1866
To day I am at work at the warehouse. Grand Ma Gayle and Ida arrived from Houston bringing the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] some drapes. George and Montgomery finished breaking up one flat boat. Hicks worked in the garden. I am still afflicted with sore throat & itch. Weather clear & warm.

Monday, September 9th, 1861
To day I went up to the mill and while there learned that Mr. Bird had this morning shot Neily's negro man George in a very cowardly manner although he did not kill the negro. I made my arrangements to move up to the mill during the remainder of my stay up the Country. I returned to Father's in the evening. weather changeable & showery & very hot.

To day I went to Crockett, and while there paid Robert George for the bale of cotton purchased on last Saturday. I made out an exhibit as admin. of Gillepsie dec'd. & turned over all the papers belonging to said decedent to William Wortham taking his receipt therefor. weather clear & very cold.

To day Bill ground 19½ bushels of corn but in consequence of the severe cold we done no other work. I bought from Robert George one bale of cotton weighing 382 lbs. and agreed to pay him 7? per lb. weather was cloudy as well as cold, and a hard freeze at night.

To day I went to Halls Bluff & took Bill with me. Darby, Martin, Albert, Masoline, Joe & Leaverton's George worked on the levy. Weather rainy & warm.
