Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Wednesday, December 13th, 1865
To day I am still at work at the ware house. I purchased another hog weighing 150 lbs for which I paid 7$ specie. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] drove up town after a few articles and also purchased for me some tobacco. Billy Duncan arrived from his trip up the Country. Weather variable & intensely cold with a strong North wind blowing. At night all the water in the different vessels was frozen and the ponds around town were covered with ice.

To day I went over to Mr. Patillo's shop and made two cribbage boards, one for Mr. Trawick and the other for Mr. Jones, after which I commenced papering my parlor. Charles Leaverton arrived from my mills on the mail stage, bringing us letters from our relatives and friends up the Country [Houston County] also 255$ specie. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] drove up town in the buggy in order to get me some tobacco. Hicks is engaged in hanging the garden and house yard gates. Weather variable and cool with occasional showers of rain.

Saturday, July 2nd, 1864
To day the boys again went out hunting cows & calves. Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] & Mrs. Leaverton came up in my buggy and remained to assist the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] in taking care of Jimmy [James Wrigley Hall], who is still very sick with a severe attack of bilious fever. Dr. Murchison came to see Jimmy professionally. The Doctor made me a present of 5 lbs of good home made tobacco. He also made for the little woman 2 bottles of paragoric. Hicks ground 14 bushels of corn. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 90°.

To day the boys are at work planting out tobacco plants. Billy Stewart & Billy Cundiff left for Crockett. I attended the mill and ground 12½ bushels of corn. At night a traveler stopped with me. Weather variable & cold so much so as to require fires for comfort.

To day the boys are still at work planting the bottom field for the second time. Billy Stewart, his wife and children in one buggy and I in my own all drove out from Crockett home, where they all put up. Upon my arrival at home, I found Mr. Fitzsimmons who had just arrived from Liberty on his way to Palestine. Hicks ground 5 bushels of corn. I purchased from Mr. Monroe while in Crockett 10 plugs of Tobacco or 5 lbs. for which I paid the little sum of one hundred and fifty dollars or $15 per plug. Weather cloudy and warm, with a considerable shower of rain at night.

Saturday, September 12th, 1863
To day the boys finished putting up the walls of the Cotton house. I rode my horse Ratler to Crockett and back in order to get my discharge from Conscription. I found however that L.W. Cooper had been removed and H.W. Beeson had been appointed the Enrolling officer in his place and he refusing to act until Monday next I had my ride for no purpose. I purchased from Mr. Monroe $82.00 worth of tobacco and $1. worth of pink root and left for home in company with Father [Joshua James Hall]. when about half way home it clouded up and rained exceedingly hard. I became thoroughly soaked with water. weather was clear in the morning and very hot.

We this day had Albert, TANNER & myself at work on the fence and reached the far corner with the worm. I let I. TANNER have 1 lb. of tobacco on a/c & Frank STEWART 5 lbs. on a/c @ 50 cts per lb. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] completed me the first flanel shirt I ever wore, and by the way it is pretty & comfortable and she has my greatful thanks for it. Weather cloudy, cold & extremely disagreeable.

Isaac TANNER set in to day for one month. It rained all day and consequently no work was done, all hands idle. I let Darby have 1 lb. of Tobacco in payment for his rails, making us even & square up to date.
