Sunday, August 12th, 1866

To day I remained at home writing up this journal. Mrs. Mixon's little son departed this life and was interred at the expenses of the Corporation. Weather variable and hot with occasional showers of rain. Ther : 88°.

Sunday, August 5th, 1866

To day in the forenoon I remained at home writing up this journal. In the evening Col. Wrigley and I attended the funeral of young Prescott Pickett, who was buried in the burial ground at Liberty. Capt. John W. Redman is still with me. I am still suffering from the itch. Weather clear & hot : Ther : 94°.

Tuesday, July 17th, 1866

To day my poor wife [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] is indeed a sorrow stricken and almost heart broken woman, for the loss of our sweet little angel Josephine Martha. I performed the last sad rite for her little remains and had them interred in the burial ground at Liberty there to remain until her God shall call her again to meet him in the great day of accounts. My sweet little babe, may she rest peacefully in the bosom of her God, and may this sad bereavement be for our future good. Edward Jones left on the [rail]cars for Houston. Weather Cloudy and hot with occasional showers of rain. Ther: 86°

Monday, July 9th, 1866

To day I am very busy at the warehouse discharging the Steamer Royal Arch and in making out freight bills. Clay Stone's little daughter Lena was buried. There was 3 deaths in town from small pox. Weather variable & hot with occasional showers of rain. Ther : 90°.

Wednesday, April 4th, 1866


To day I am engaged at the warehouse. Dr. Brashears' sister was buried at West Liberty. Roberta [Downes Halyard nee Hall] does not seem to improve much in her general health. Another flat boat came down the river with 300 bales of Cotton on board, John Murchison in command of it. Weather cloudy and cool with a terriffic rain.

Tuesday, April 3rd, 1866


To day I am at work at the warehouse storing cotton. Two more flat boats came down the river, upon one of which commanded by W.H. Farish I had 28 bales of Cotton. I paid him 112$ gold freight on same. Dr. Brashears borrowed Col. Wrigley's wagon to haul the remains of his sister to West Liberty for interment. Bolivar Sublett came up and took dinner with [his cousin] the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp]. Weather cloudy & cool with a high wind blowing.

Sunday, March 25th, 1866


To day I was compelled to work at the warehouse loading the steamer Ruthven which had just arrived from Galveston after shipping 500 Bbls freight she left for the up river. The river is rising plenty. Roberta [Downes Halyard nee Hall] but little improved. I am still suffering with the cough and the itch. Jilks who was killed last night was buried to day. Weather cloudy and cool with rain throughout the night.

Saturday, January 20th, 1866


To day I am at work at the Warehouse. John Cochran left on the cars for Houston. Col. Wrigley is still at work in the Convent well. Hicks & Albert are at work with the little wagon, hauling ground poles to store cotton upon. Frank [Stewart] & Burt [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] are still sick. Pet [Florence Mahala Hall] had a chill and fever. Mrs. Waring [Harriett Waring nee Gill] was buried to day near the residence of Leon White [her cousin]. Weather variable and cold, with a severe norther blowing.

Saturday, May 30th, 1863

To day I attended the burial of Jack McKim and while there I lost a mershaum pipe which had been presented to me by Capt. Peacock. Charley Lund arrived on the train from Houston and I went over on the return trip of the same train to Houston in company with Mrs. Bolling and Miss Eugenia Stanwood, at which place we arrived late in the evening and put up at the old Capitol. before leaving Liberty I let Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] have $101. on account of Sam Sharp [Samuel Houston Sharp]. expenses to Houston 5$. weather changeable & hot.

Monday, December 8th, 1862


To day the remains of my old friend Francis L. Barziza was buried at Liberty by the Masons. The procession was large and the ceremonies were well performed by C.L. Cleveland the Master of the lodge. I am loafing around town generally, with [nothing] really to do. weather clear & cool.

Saturday, December 6th, 1862


To day I learned from Mr. Barziza that my old friend Frank L. Barziza departed this life on last Thursday after a lingering illness of some time with consumption. His remains will be interred at Liberty with Masonic honor. alas poor Frank may God have mercy upon him. I am loafing around town & done nothing in the way of packing up my furniture owing to the continued sickness of Bob. weather clear & cold with a frost at night.

Tuesday, July 22nd, 1862

To day I rode my horse Rat down the river in company with Clay Stone to the residence of Dick Cole where I remained for dinner and spent a very agreeable time. The remains of old deaf Smith was buried with masonic honors. The boys were engaged all day in digging the grave for the old man, and in assisting at his burial. weather very hot. Ther. 99°.

Saturday, July 19th, 1862

To day I am engaged in the office. In the evening the Mayor & Council of the City of Liberty met, and as Mayor & ex officio President of the board of Alderman had to attend said meeting. The boys are engaged in digging the grave for poor old Charley Bealing who died in Beaumont and whose remains was brought over on the cars for burial here. He was buried in the Roman Catholic burial ground with the usual ceremonies of that church. weather clear & very hot. Ther: 94°.

To day the steamer Ruthven arrived with Capt. James Wrigley and Ed Jones on board. In the evening I assisted Capt. Wrigley in burying his dead infant. The boys busy in the ware house. The [Trinity] river still rising. weather changeable with occasional showers of rain.

To day Charley Lund arrived on the cars, having the remains of John Wrigley in charge. In the evening he was interred by the Masonic fraternity with a large concourse of citizens in attendance. although the place of burial was some 6 miles off myself & family attended. weather cloudy with drizzling rain and at night a very hard rain.

To day Charley Lund left on the cars to attend to the bringing of the remains of John Wrigley home for burial. I am very busy in the store selling goods. The boys are in the swamp getting posts for the fence. weather clear & rather cold.

To day the Steamer Ruthven arrived from and departed for Galveston having brought but little freight. I am busy however in the warehouse. Mrs. Stanwood was carried over to West Liberty for burial. weather changeable and very unpleasant.

To day the Steamer Ruthven arrived. Capt. James Wrigley returned from Bolivar point. We all left Galveston on the Ruthven for Liberty. The remains of R.P. Martin was brought up on the steamer for burial at Liberty. weather cloudy & rather cool.

To day Mr. Lovell was buried by the Liberty Guards with Military honors. The Steamer Ruthven broke her wheel about one mile below the wharf and in consequence of which detained for repairs and lost the mail time. Nothing doing on my house. Business generally dull. weather clear but rather cool.

To day James Wrigley with the hands finished laying the ground work of my new house. Young Lovell a member of the Liberty Guards died and will be buried on the morrow with military honors. weather changeable with strong wind blowing from the North, making winter clothing very desirable.
