Saturday, March 22nd, 1862


To day I went up town to attend the election of a Brig. Genl. & there voted for T.J. Chambers. Business dull. The Steamer Ruthven left for Galveston. Alex* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] is still at my house. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] is better. The Boys finished the well house. Capt. Scruggs' Co. received some 10 or 15 recruits at the ware house. weather clear & very cold.

Friday, March 21st, 1862


To day the steamer Ruthven arrived bringing but little freight. Business dull. Boys finished covering in the well house. weather clear & very cold with a hard frost at night.

Thursday, March 20th, 1862


To day I am very busy as salesman. Alex* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] came over and remained all night with the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp], who is very much indisposed [pregnant]. Boys still at work on the well house. weather clear but very cold in consequence of a severe North wind.

Wednesday, March 19th, 1862


To day the steamer Ruthven failed to arrive. I am busy making out accounts. Boys at work on my well house. Mr. Patillo completed my stable, carriage house, barn, etc. At night I went up town [Liberty] to meet a party of friends who had assembled together in honor of my having been elected Col. of the 5th Regt. and at which party wit & champagne flowed pretty freely. all things passing off in fine style. weather cloudy. at night a strong North wind came out making it very cool.
