Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

To day I am still at the Crawford house in Galveston. My Cough is a little better. I drove out to the beach in company with Charley Lund and spent a very pleasant day. Capt. J.H. Wootters called around to see me and spent the evening. Weather clear.

To day I discharged the Str. Kate and loaded her with Cotton. I sent to C.C. Lund & Co by Capt. Chandler $10.60 gold to pay for the potatoes & cod fish received from them by the former trip of the Kate, also for one Bbl. of potatoes received for Mrs. Beale* [Elizabeth Lemaire Beale nee Waring]. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] drove out to Mrs. Massie's & back. Burt [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] & Frank [Stewart] no better. Weather cloudy with drizzling showers of rain.

To day I am at work at the store house. The train from Beaumont brought over the lumber to build the Cotton shed, and in the evening the wagons hauled it down to the river. Frank Stewart and Roberta [Downes Halyard nee Hall] are both quite sick, do not improve any. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] drove up town after a few articles. Mrs. Lund came over and spent the evening with the little woman. I purchased two shoats, for which I paid 5$ specie. Weather changeable with drizzling rain.

To day I am at work at the store house. The boys are at work around the house. Hicks hauled one load of wood for Mrs. Beale* [Elizabeth Lemaire Beale nee Waring]. I made Hicks a present of 10$. Weather clear & cold, with a hard freeze and frost at night, being the coldest night of the winter so far.

All the forenoon of to day I worked at the ware house. In the evening the propeller Kate and sloop Luna arrived from Galveston with considerable freight. I received by the Kate one barrel of flour and 35$ in specie due me from Charles C. Lund. Weather variable and pleasant.

To day about one hour before day break, Col. Wrigley & I drove down to Walnut bluff in the buggy in order that I could get on the Steamer Mary Hill in accordance with my agreement with Capt. Peacock, but she had dropped down the river and I was disappointed in my expected trip to Galveston. So we returned home in time for breakfast. Col. Wrigley's wagon hauled me 47 bus. of corn that I had purchased from Mr. F.W. Key. Charley Lund left for Houston. Weather variable and rather cool.

To day I drove up town in my buggy and settled up in full for what things the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] purchased on yesterday. I then drove down to the warehouse and while there I paid Charley Lund the 15$ I had borrowed from him also ten dollars for 150 lbs of bacon and $350 for one pair of shoes that he sent up to me on the 29th ulta. Be it remembered that my little woman attained the 25th anniversary of her birth day. Weather variable and cool.

To day my freedwoman Jemima and old Elsey left me, in route for Galveston, thus leaving me without a servant and forcing the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] into the kitchen to perform her own household work. I assisted around the house generally. I received a pair of shoes which Charles Lund purchased for me in New Orleans for which he paid $350 and which amt. I still owe him. James Wrigley and Mrs. Perkins arrived on the train from Houston. Weather changeable and warm with occasional [showers] of rain.

To day I am still in Liberty and succeeded in settling up the business of the firm of James Wrigley etc. after a fashion. I took a bond from said Wrigley with Charles C. Lund and Edward P. White as securities in the sum of $20,000 for the payment of the outstanding liabilities. I then retired from said firm. I visited the town with E.P. White. The steamer Ruthven arrived from Houston & Capt. Peacock came home on her. Dr. Stanwood & his wife came down to Mrs. Beales where I am, stopping to see me. weather clear & hot. Ther: 95°.

To day I attended the burial of Jack McKim and while there I lost a mershaum pipe which had been presented to me by Capt. Peacock. Charley Lund arrived on the train from Houston and I went over on the return trip of the same train to Houston in company with Mrs. Bolling and Miss Eugenia Stanwood, at which place we arrived late in the evening and put up at the old Capitol. before leaving Liberty I let Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] have $101. on account of Sam Sharp [Samuel Houston Sharp]. expenses to Houston 5$. weather changeable & hot.
