Tuesday, August 21st, 1866

To day I am still in Galveston. I deposited with Messrs. J.C. & S.R. Smith & Co. the sum of 3000$ in gold, subject to the order of myself or Col. James Wrigley. In the evening I left Galveston on the Steamer Era No. 3 bound for Liberty, having left Col. Wrigley in Galveston. I had a pleasant trip across the bay & up Buffalo bayou, and met many old acquaintances on board of the Steamer. Weather variable & hot. Ther: 84°.

Sunday, July 15th, 1866

To day I left Galveston on the Steamer Era No. 3 in route for Liberty, having left Col. Wrigley in Galveston. We had a pleasant run across the bay and up the bayou. Weather cloudy & warm, with occasional showers of rain. Expenses 6$. Ther 88°.

Thursday, July 12th, 1866

To day we left the mouth of the Trinity River and after a boisterous run across the bay, we arrived at Galveston, at which place I found Col. Wrigley. We put up at the Washington Hotel. Weather cloudy & hot. Ther : 86°.

Tuesday, March 13th, 1866


To day after settling my board bill to the Washington Hotel amounting to 8$ My medical bill 75$ and the various other bills which I had contracted amounting in all to 500$ in gold I left Galveston on the steamer Indian No. 2 in route for Liberty. We run across the bay and anchored at the mouth of the [Trinity] river for the night. My cough is much improved. Weather cloudy and cool with rain occasionally.

Tuesday, October 31st, 1865


To day I am still ? having finished all my business I left in company with Billy Stewart who has recovered sufficiently well to travel in the ? bound for Houston. I paid for my bill at the Hotel & ? We had a very pleasant trip across the bay and up ? bayou considering the cold weather that was still blowing ? cold the weather was clear. Thus closes my notes for the month of October.

Thursday, May 18th, 1865

To day I left Galveston on the steamer Ruthven and had a pleasant trip across the bay & up the river. we arrived at Liberty late in the evening. I found my house in a wretched, dirty and filthy condition, more like a pig pen than a gentleman's residence. Weather cloudy and warm.

To day I am still in Galveston. The "Ruthven" run down to battery "Scurry" and over to Pelican spit, and brought over to Galveston 150 soldiers and 120 negroes. I went over on the excursion. Weather cloudy and warm.

To day after getting our cargo on board we left Chamber's wharf on our voyage to Houston and had a pleasant run across the bay and up the San Jacinto river and Buffalo bayou. Weather variable and rather cold with a light shower of rain.

To day after taking nearly all the cotton off the steamer, she floated and we got out of the canal and over the bay and then run to Chamber's Wharf and commenced taking to the loading again. The Steamer Orizaba also run over the bar and proceeded on her voyage to Galveston. Weather changeable & cool with a light shower of rain.

Friday, April 28th, 1865

To day Capt. Peacock & I left Liberty on the Steamer Mary Hill for Galveston. we had a pleasant run down the river & across the bay, and arrived at Galveston at 1. o'clock at night. at home the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] let Mr. Monroe have 2 bales of cotton. one weighed 486 lbs & the other 513 pounds. Hicks ground 42 bushels of corn. Weather clear & pleasant.

Tuesday, July 29th, 1862


This morning the Steamer Ruthven arrived in Galveston after running all last night. After seeing Mrs. Trowell safely home, I put up at the Washington Hotel. I spent the day very pleasantly in Galveston with Hitchcock, Wakelee and others. I took dinner with Hitchcock & found his family all well. In the way of business Galveston is perfectly dead. The blockading vessels are still off the bar being five in number. weather clear & hot. Ther: 98°.

To day I busy with the boys in the ware house braking out freight. I left Liberty on the Steamer Ruthven for Galveston. we had a pleasant run down the river and across the bay. Mrs. Trowell went down with me and of course I had to take especial care of her and see her safely home. weather clear & very hot. Ther. 98°.

To day I loaned my horse Hawk to D. Richardson who left in company with Charley Lund for Smith's point on Galveston bay. I am very busy in the conscript office. The boys are still engaged in hauling corn from Swilley's landing. The little woman is able to be up and look after her household affairs. weather clear & warm.

To day we all arrived at Liberty safe & sound after a very pleasant passage from Galveston. I was presented with a brace of very nice wild ducks, which I enjoyed for dinner with great gusto. weather changeable & rather warm.

To day I left Liberty on the Steamer Ruthven in company with James Wrigley and Geo. Gordon. we had quite a pleasant run down the river and across the bay, arriving at Galveston at 1 o'clock P.M. weather clear & pleasant.
