Friday, September 5th, 1862

To day I went to Crockett in company with William Leaverton and there ascertained that Capt. James Wrigley had been in town one week. I also found his wife there. I tried to settled up with several persons but failed. In the evening we returned to Fathers. weather changeable & rather hot.

Thursday, September 4th, 1862

To day William Leaverton returned from Brody's and we went up to the Mill together to ascertain how things went on. We returned to Father's in the evening. Father returned from the Saline pretty well worn out. weather cloudy & hot with occasional showers of rain.

Wednesday, September 3rd, 1862


To day I rode Rob over to Mr. Keens in company with Roberta & Laura, and from there I went to Beasley's place to sample some cotton but not finding Beasley I returned to Father's where I spent the rest of the day. William Leaverton went over the river to see Mr. Broady in order to have some shoes made. weather cloudy & hot with a very hard rain.

Tuesday, September 2nd, 1862

To day I went up to the mill with Roberta & Laura, and made Bill drive the little wagon down to Fathers, and there unloaded the iron and salt. I called on J.H. Leaverton and purchased from him some fodder. I returned to Father's and found that he had gone to the Saline. at night I was very sick and spent a disagreeable time being up & down all night. weather cloudy, rainy and rather cool.

Monday, September 1st, 1862

To day we left our camp at Hallmark's & drove 16 miles to the Mill, where I left the little wagon and mules with the servants. The roads were very heavy. In the evening I rode hawk down to Father's where I found the little woman and my pet daughter Fawn enjoying fine health, and who were much pleased to see me. I also found Father's family well. weather changeable & hot with drizzling showers of rain occasionally.

Sunday, August 31st, 1862

To day we left our camp at Smith's and drove 18 miles and camped at Wm. Hallmarks. The roads were wretchedly bad. no incidents by the road side. weather cloudy & drizzling rain all day with a very hard rain at night. expenses 75 cts. Ther: 88°. Thus closes the notes for the month of August and as it also closes the summer I shall not keep notes of the stages of the Thermometer until next summer should God spare me to live so long.

Saturday, August 30th, 1862

To day we left Huntsville and drove 12 miles and crossed the Trinity River at Tuscaloosa. Thence 6 miles further and camped for the night at Smith's. no incidents on the road to note. weather cloudy & showery with a very hard rain at night. expenses $2.75. Ther: 86°.
