Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

To day I am still in Crockett attending the District Court principally as a witness. I collected from George Numson the sum of $16.30. nothing doing in town of note. weather changable & cool.

Monday, February 25th, 1861
To day I went to Crockett and led Mr. Downes' horse home to him. Father [Joshua James Hall] came to Crockett but returned home in the evening. I settled the cost in the case of Sharp vs. McLemore for my old homestead. weather changable with a hard rain at night.

To day I remained home with my family and spent the time in reading. Dick came up from Mothers [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] but returned immediately. weather clear but rather cool to be pleasant.

Saturday, February 23rd, 1861
To day I went with John Harwell to the polls, and while there had to act as one of the clerks to the election. The vote at precinct No. 7 stood for Secession 31, against Secession 5. I voted for it. weather cloudy & warm, until in the evening when the wind hauled around to the North & it became very cold with a heavy frost at night.

To day I went home and found Bill at work on the mill house. In the evening the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] & Florence [Hall] with Father [Joshua James Hall], Mother [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] & Toby [Horace Oscar Hall] came up. They returned home late in the evening. This being my birth day I took a milk punch. weather changable & warm for the time of year.

I am still in Crockett. I received from Mr. Downes the sum of $20. which I immediately paid out. Father [Joshua James Hall] came in but returned home in the evening. Nothing interesting doing in town and time passes very dull with me. weather changable & warm for the season.
