Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Tuesday, March 12th, 1861
To day at 12 o'clock I started for Liberty in the buggy with the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] and Florence and arrived in Crockett in good time. we remained there all night stopping at Lady Downes'. I employed Frank Stewart for the balance of the year at the rate of $200 per annum. I left John S. Harwell in possession of my mill, and also left Charley Hall there. Harwell is in possession of the mill under a written contract for the current year. weather clear & pleasant.

Monday, March 11th, 1861
To day Mother [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] & Father [Joshua James Hall] came up to our house. I gave Father my fine double barrel shotgun. I sent Charley Hall to Mr. Lacy's for the small ? wagon, who returned with it in the evening. I am to give Lacy $100 for the wagon. Still at work in covering in the Mill house. Mother & the children remained all night. weather clear & pleasant.

Sunday, March 10th, 1861
To day I went down to Mother's [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] and had a settlement with her. I find that I advanced her upon 5 D/C the sum of $112.50 and upon our final settlement she fell in my debt $20.10. I gave to Father [Joshua James Hall] a power of attorney to manage and control my boy Albert. in the evening I returned home & found Charley Hall there. weather clear & pleasant.

Saturday, March 9th, 1861
To day I went to Crockett by the way of Wortham's mill. I contracted for a little wagon with Mr. Lacy. I paid Douglass, the assr. & collector the sum of $62.55 Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] taxes. at home the hands are still at work on the mill house. I also returned home from Crockett in the evening. The mill ground 13½ bushels of meal. weather clear & rather warm.

Friday, March 8th, 1861
To day I went down to Father's [Joshua James Hall] and received from Frank Stewart the sum of one hundred dollars that he collected for me at Cairo. I paid five dollars for taking up Charley Lund's horse that he borrowed at Cairo, and sent him to Cairo by Frank Stewart. After dinner I returned home in company with Mother [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts], Father also came up in the evening and I let him have 30$ in cash. weather was cloudy & occasional showers of rain. At night there was a frost.
