Sunday, May 13th, 1866

To day I remained at home writing up this journal. I had my barrel of ale hauled up home. Mrs. Stanwood came over & left with me a number of a/c's for collection. I am still suffering with the itch & sore throat. Weather variable & cool with a hard rain and storm at night. 

Monday, February 20th, 1865

To day I rode my horse Rob in company with James Roberts to Crockett and back and while there I paid Mr. Douglass the assessor & Collector my state & County taxes, which amounted to $235. Hicks done nothing in consequence of the mill machinery getting out of running order. Weather cloudy and cold with a rain at night.

Saturday, November 22nd, 1862

To day I went up town and assisted the ladies in erecting a stage upon which to represent some tableaux which exhibition is for the benefit of the suffering soldiers in our army in the way of purchasing clothing, shoes etc. The County Court passed upon and allowed the account of Sam H. Sharp as assessor & collector and discharged him from further liability upon his official bond as such. weather clear and pleasant with considerable frost at night.

Monday, August 18th, 1862

To day I am busy assisting Sam H. Sharp* in making out his rolls as Assessor & Collector of Liberty County. The steamer Ruthven left for Galveston. The boys are at work in the swamp getting out cypress pughes. Bill is engaged in hauling them home. weather clear & hot. Ther: 95°. [*Sam is a 2nd great-grandpa of the Keeper of this blog.]

Friday, August 15th, 1862

To day I am busy writing in the war tax Collectors office and finished all the business to be done in it. Sam Sharp is still busy at work on his rolls. The Boys are still busy getting out pughes in the swamp. at night I visited Charley Lund and heard some very good music and had a social whisk party. weather changeable & hot. Ther: 95°.

Thursday, August 14th, 1862

To day I am very busy writing in the office of the war tax Collector. I purchased from Nicholas D. Hamil of Chambers County a very likely negro girl about 19 years old, by the name of Maria for which I paid him 1200$. Boys in the swamp getting out pughes. Sam Sharp is still at work on his rolls. Bill at work on the fence. weather changeable & hot. Ther: 95°.

Wednesday, August 13th, 1862

To day I am very busy writing in the office of the war tax Collector. The Steamer Ruthven arrived from Galveston and my friend Frank Hitchcock came up on her. He left on her in the evening for Galveston. Sam* Sharp with the boys are busy in the Ware house braking out freight. At night I had a party of gentlemen who called upon me & we spent a pleasant time at a game of euchre. I weighed some cotton for E.A. Boothe in the morning. weather changeable & hot. Ther. 95°.

Tuesday, August 12th, 1862

To day I am very busy writing in the War tax Collector's office. Sam Sharp still engaged in making out his rolls as Assessor & Collector. Charley Lund came home on the cars having left his wife at Sour Lake. Bill is still at work on the gates and finished the large wagon one. The other boys are at work in the swamp getting out pughes. weather changeable with occasional showers of rain. Ther. standing at 95°.

Monday, August 11th, 1862

To day I am very busy writing in the war tax Collectors office. Charley Lund and his wife left on the cars for Sour Lake, there to rusticate for some time. Sam Sharp still at work on his rolls. E.H. Cushing arrived from Houston on the cars and came to see me. Bill still at work on the house yard gates. weather changeable & hot. Ther: 95°.

To day I am busy writing in the war tax collector's office making out rolls. Sam Sharp is at work making out his rolls as Assessor & Collector. Bill busy making gates for the house yard. weather clear & hot. Ther. 94°.

Thursday, August 7th, 1862

To day I am busy writing in the office of the war tax collector, making out rolls, certificates etc. Sam Sharp commenced making out his rolls as Assessor & Collector for Liberty County. Boys still at work on the fence. weather changeable & hot. Ther: 95°.

Monday, July 21st, 1862

To day I am engaged in the Provost Marshal's office. Sam Sharp attending to his duties as Assessor & Collector. Bill finished the garden fence at last, and in the course of human events may get the entire fence completed. J.H. Smith familiarly known as old deaf was taken sick on yesterday and died to day at 40 minutes after 3 o'clock P.M. Sam Sharp and I set up with his remains part of the night & Charley Lund the rest of the night. weather clear & very oppressive. Ther: 98°.

Wednesday, July 2nd, 1862

To day I am still busy at the office working on the war tax rolls for Charly Lund and succeeded in finishing them, thus completing all the work in the tax collector's office until after the 1st Monday in August next at which time his sales of non rendered lands comes off. Bill is at work on the garden fence. weather clear & hot. Ther. at 98°.

Thursday, June 26th, 1862

To day I am busy in the office working on the war tax Collector's advertisements of sale of lands for which the tax had not been paid, and succeeded in finishing them. The boys are still in the swamp getting out jail timber. Capt. W.* got on a considerable tight and it pretty well all day. weather clear & hot. Ther: 94°. [*i.e., Wrigley]

Friday, June 20th, 1862

To day Sam H Sharp having received his commission as assessor & Collector of Liberty County, I am busily engaged in arranging his tax books in order to facilitate him in his collections. Boys at work on the fence. I am getting on pretty well as a batchelor. weather clear & hot. Ther: 94°.

Wednesday, May 7th, 1862

To day Charley Lund came home from his collecting toure in Hardin county. I am engaged in writing in the war tax collector's office. The boys finished the fence around my horse lot. weather cloudy with occasional showers of rain, making it very disagreeable. The [Trinity] river still rising.

Wednesday, February 12th, 1862

To day I am engaged at the store. In the evening I went up town for the purposes of signing the bond as security for Charley Lund who has been appointed collector of the war tax for the year 1861. weather clear & very pleasant.
