Tuesday, August 28th, 1866

To day I am at work at the warehouse. Capt. John W. Redman is still with me. Hicks is at work sewing and brushing in turnip seed. Ned Smith assisted Capt. Dawson in the black smith shop to mend the tonge of Jimmy's [James Wrigley Hall] little buggy which was broken. I paid Ned Smith on a/c $1.50. Mr. & Mrs. Tarleton are still boarding with me and upon the whole are the most disagreeable couple that I ever had any transactions with. Weather cloudy and hot with a strong north wind blowing. Saturday, August 25th, 1866

To day I am at work at the warehouse. Hicks and Ned are preparing the ground to sew turnip seed. I paid Ned two dollars on a/c. he was taken sick and lost nearly the entire day. Capt. John W. Redman is still with me. Dennis went to mill in the wagon. Weather cloudy and hot with occasional showers of rain. Ther: 81°.

Friday, August 24th, 1866

To day I am at work at the warehouse. Hicks & Ned are at work preparing the ground to sew turnip seed. Capt. John W. Redman is still with me. Roberta [Downes Halyard nee Hall] is still staying with grand ma Gayle as Company. Mr. Beard is still at work on the railing for little Joe's grave [Josephine Martha Hall]. Weather cloudy and hot with a hard rain & wind blowing. Ther: 82°.

Friday, September 8th, 1865

To day I drove out to Rick's mill after some meal. Mr. Haggard & I drove out to Dr. ? but not finding the Doctor at home we did not tarry long. Ned is still at work in the garden and sewed turnip & raddish seed. Weather changeable with occasional showers of rain, and a hard rain at night, making it a little cool.

Thursday, September 7th, 1865

To day I worked a little in the garden and then drove up town in my buggy to mail a package of letters. The negro man Ned is still at work in the garden preparing the ground to sow turnip & other seed. Weather changeable with a light shower of rain.

Tuesday, September 5th, 1865

To day I employed the negro man Ned Smith & put him to work plowing up the garden in order to sow some turnip & raddish seeds. I worked a little around the house. My boil is still improving and I am now able to sit down a little. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] drove up town after some sugar. We received letters from the up Country, that is, from our relatives at the mills, in which they informed us that our wagons were on the eve of starting down and that we might soon expect them. Weather cloudy & hot with occasional showers of rain.

Wednesday, August 30th, 1865

To day I drove down to Clay Stone's and got from him 4.5 lbs of bacon for which I am to pay him 15 cents per pound. I paid Mr. Jackson one dollar for some chickens I purchased from him on the 17th inst. Fawn had fever. Ophelia was sick all day. I worked a little in the garden preparing to sew some turnip seed. Weather cloudy & warm. Ther: 80°.

Thursday, September 15th, 1864

To day the boys are at work planting turnip seeds & repairing the fence around the mill field. John is engaged in hauling rails from the King house. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp], children and myself drove down to Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] in the buggy & spent the day. upon our return we found Capt. Peacock who had just arrived from Liberty on his way to the Saline. Hicks ground 3 bushels of corn. Weather cloudy with showers of rain. Ther: 76°.

Tuesday, September 29th, 1863

To day the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] is preparing her garden to plant eschalots, turnips &c. The boys done nothing in consequence of the rain in fact it rained throughout the entire day & was a little cool. The mill pond was slightly filled when I ground 7 bushels of wheat and 4 bushels of corn.

Tuesday, September 15th, 1863

To day the boys are still at work chopping logs to build a corn crib. I drove my horse Rob and buggy to Crockett and back in order to be discharged from conscription but so far have failed. Sam [Samuel Houston Sharp] rode my horse Gladiator to Crockett for a like purpose as myself but he also failed. Hicks made a sand bolster for the wagon and also ground 4 bushels of corn. Ellen came up from Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] and brought Fawn [Florence Mahala Hall] home with her. James [James Wrigley Hall] had another chill and fever. Wolf is still improving and might be pronounced entirely well. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] had turnip, raddish and mustard seeds sown. weather cloudy and warm with occasional showers of rain.
