Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Tuesday, May 23rd, 1865
To day I am still at Booths. The steamer Orizaba arrived from Galveston, with Spaight's Regiment on board. The soldiers of this command upon coming ashore immediately proceeded to sack Col. Wrigley's warehouse, stealing every species of property they could find, both public and private. some one of the party stold my fine double barrel shot gun, saddle, bridle and blanket out of the ware house. May my eternal curse rest upon the scoundrel who done it. The reign of terror is now complete in the land. our own soldiers are doing worse than the enemy could under any circumstances could do. The Steamers Ruthven & Orizaba left in order to seek a place of safety from the soldiers. At night Col. Wrigley arrived from Houston perfectly disgusted with the opperation of our soldiers, and the disgusting lawlessness of our citizens. Weather clear & hot.

To day I am still at John Booths. A part of the disbanded soldiers passed through this place and stole every thing they could get hold off. Every person is hiding their horses, mules and wagons from them, and considerable excitement prevails hence. Weather clear and very hot.

To day I am still at John Booth's and loafing around the river. The Commissary & Quarter Master's department were broken up and the officers ceased to discharge the duties of their offices. Weather clear and hot.

To day I left Galveston on the steamer Ruthven and had a pleasant trip across the bay & up the river. we arrived at Liberty late in the evening. I found my house in a wretched, dirty and filthy condition, more like a pig pen than a gentleman's residence. Weather cloudy and warm.

To day I am still at Galveston, with no prospects of leaving. In the evening Capt. Peacock with his family came down to Galveston on the Steamer Orizaba. He having left Liberty early in the morning. Weather cloudy & warm.
