Friday, March 31st, 1865

To day I am still in Crockett and cannot get away as my [mule] has not yet been found. Billy Stewart tried to get my money from the negro boy York which he had stolen and succeeded in getting 30$ in new issue. The balance he had disposed off. at the mill Hicks ground 41 bushels of corn. Mother [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] got 13 lbs of cotton. Weather changeable & pleasant. Thus closes my notes for the month of March.

Thursday, March 30th, 1865

To day I am still in Crockett and stopping with Billy Stewart. My mule broke out of the lot last night and made his escape. Billy Stewart's negro boy York robbed my pocket book of 250$ in new issue of Confederate Money and 1$ in specie. Cols. Gregg, Jones & Crawford took dinner at Billy Stewarts. Weather clear & cool.

Thursday, January 26th, 1865

To day I borrowed from Mr. Haden the sum of 25$ in specie and then left Crockett in Company with Dr. Murchison for home. I put my boy Bill in the service of the Government for the space of two months and 12 days to do work in the ? boat yard at Brookfield's bluff. Hicks ground 2½ bushels of wheat & 5 bushels of corn. Weather changeable & cold with a hard freeze at night.

Monday, September 12th, 1864

To day the boys are engaged picking peas. I rode down with the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] after some muscadines and succeeded in getting a basket full. John arrived with the wagon from Huntsville all safe and sound. Mr. Morgan's wagon arrived when he left in route for the saline. I sent by him 20$ specie to purchase some wool if possible for the little woman. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 90°.

Tuesday, January 19th, 1864

To day I sent Sam* [Samuel Houston Sharp] his clothing and 100$ more by Hicks to Crockett. He was to leave Crockett this day in route for Marshall. John is at work hauling wood, and Bill is assisting me at the mill. I ground 8 bushels of corn and 5 bushels of wheat. Weather changeable & cold with a hard freeze & frost at night.

Monday, January 18th, 1864

To day the boys are at work on the stables. Sam* [Samuel Houston Sharp] rode my horse Ratler to Crockett and was conscripted and put into the army of the Confederacy Sans Serimonia. I let Sam have 100$ before he left for Crockett. Mother [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] and the children [Roberta and Toby] left for home. In the evening Mr. Thomas Sharp arrived from the wheat region with two loads of wheat which he left at the mill. He and Mr. Anderson remained with me for the night. I ground 51 bushels of corn. Weather changeable and cold, with a hard freeze at night.

Tuesday, February 3rd, 1863

To day Sam* Sharp rode my horse Rob to Crockett and back in order to collect some money from Capt. Odell but he failed in his mission. he however purchased me a good iron wedge. I had the garden plowed up for the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] to commence her gardening. Hicks at work on the house fence. I ground 5½ bushels of corn. weather cloudy, cold, dark and gloomy with strong indications of rain.

Thursday, December 18th, 1862

To day I went up town and purchased the celebrated horse Gladiator also a fine buggy from Dr. J.O. Shelby to go up the Country [to Houston County] to see my family for which I paid him 600$ Confederate money. weather clear & cool.

Wednesday, September 10th, 1862

To day I went to Crockett in company with Mrs. Wrigley in the buggy. Lelia & Bob riding on horse back, they being in route for Liberty. I returned to Father's in the evening after having seen Mrs. Wrigley safely started on her journey. expenses at Crockett to Mrs. Wrigley 5$. incidentals 7$. weather changeable and hot.

Sunday, December 23rd, 1860

I am still in Liberty and at work in the store doing but little business. times are very tight, and money scarce, but whiskey bears a premium, although there is plenty of the article in market. weather rather cool, cloudy and occasional showers of rain.
