Sunday, August 6th, 1865

To day I sent the negro boy Crockett down to Mr. Cooks after six bushels of corn that I had ? from him. Crockett brought a part of it home and left a part of it at the warehouse. I remained at home reading. Weather changeable and hot. Temp: 81°.

Friday, July 11th, 1862

To day Lieut. Cook and his party arrived from Houston and attempted to press my mules into the service as a military necessity, which put me on a high horse & uncomfortably tight. The boys are still at work on the jail. weather clear and hot. Ther: 96°.

Monday, June 9th, 1862

To day I made the boys move the desks & papers belonging to the Provost Marshal's office to the little house belonging to Wm. Meyer which I have rented for an office and which will make a very pleasant one. One of Capt. Cook's men died and his remains was carried over on the cars. Boys engaged storing freight. My Pet Fawn has entirely recovered. Charley Lund left on the cars for Houston. weather clear & hot. Ther: at 95°.

Saturday, May 24th, 1862

To day Capt. Cook and twelve men went down the river in rateaux for the purpose of marching out the cotton on the banks of the river. The boys are busy hauling. weather changeable & rather cool.

Friday, May 23rd, 1862

To day Capt. R.V. Cook and Company came over from Houston on the cars and took possession of Liberty as a military post. The County having been put under martial law. The boys are busily engaged in hauling with the little wagon. Business dull. weather changeable & cool.
