Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

To day the boys commenced pulling fodder in the mill field. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp], Florence [Florence Mahala Hall] & I drove down to the mill in the buggy but did not stay long. Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] came up from Father's [Joshua James Hall] and brought Berta [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] home with her. Father came up in the evening and took Berta home. I put up the little woman's loom ready for work. Weather clear and hot. Ther: 95°.

Friday, July 22nd, 1864
To day the boys cut up & salted down the beef and then made a trip down to the mill and brought up the little woman's [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] loom. Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] rode down to Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] and remained there all night. Weather changeable and hot with a light shower of rain. Ther: 92°.

To day the boys went down to Father's [Joshua James Hall] and killed a beef. I rode my horse hawk as far as Mrs. Bird's and there I borrowed her horse Jo and rode to Crockett. while at Crockett I purchased 1 oz. quinine for 300$. 1 oz. blue mass 45$. 5 combs 50$. 2 lbs. blk. pepper 60$. In the evening I returned home. Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] came up & spent the day. Weather variable and hot. Ther: 90°.

To day I went out with the boys after a beef but without success. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] & Louisa walked down to Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] and back. I rode down to the mill & back to see how things are going on. Weather changeable & hot, with a light shower of rain. Ther: 92°.
