Tuesday, August 2nd, 1864

To day the boys are at work fixing up my wagon to send to Crockett. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] & I rode down to the mill and thence to Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts]. Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] went home with us and spent the day but returned to Mother's at night. Weather variable. Ther: 90°.

Monday, August 1st, 1864

To day the boys killed a beef and are at work salting it down. I rode over to attend the general election of State & County officers. Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] rode down to Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] and remained there all night. Weather variable & warm. Ther: 85°.

Sunday, July 31st, 1864


To day I drove the buggy and mules down to Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] & carried the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] & children with me. We left Jimmy [James Wrigley Hall] & the little Major [James Hall Sharp] with Mother to remain a few days. Weather changeable with a hard shower of rain. Ther: 80°. Thus closes my notes for the month of July.

Saturday, July 30th, 1864

To day Bill is at work planting irish potatoes. Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] and Dr. Murchison left for their respective homes. Florence's [Florence Mahala Hall] arm is very much swollen and exceedingly painful. Mrs. Keen came over and fixed the little woman's [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] indigo. Berta [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] & Toby [Horace Oscar Hall] came up and spent the day. I let Mr. Keen have 1½ bushels of meal. Weather cloudy with occasional showers of rain. Ther: 90°.

Friday, July 29th, 1864

To day Bill is at work plowing out the peas in the little field. John is still quite sick and unable to do anything. Florence [Florence Mahala Hall] fell from the top of the fence and again fractured her right arm, in consequence of which I sent for Dr. Murchison & Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] both of whom came & remained all night. Weather cloudy with showers of rain throughout the entire day. Ther: 80°.

Thursday, July 28th, 1864

To day the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] rode down to the mill & had her indigo cut & brought home. I am at work repairing the buggy harness. Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] is engaged weaving & succeeded in weaving 1 yd. I let Mr. Keen have 50 lbs. of flour. Weather changeable and hot. Ther: 90°.

Wednesday, July 27th, 1864


To day Bill finished pulling fodder in the mill field. John still complaining although he made a trip to the mill in the little wagon. Mrs. Keen came over & spent the day. Roberta [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] & Ag. came up in the cart and brought us twelve water melons. Florence [Florence Mahala Hall] & Josephine [Josephine Martha Hall] are still sick. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 91°.
