Monday, September 19th, 1864

To day the boys are at work pulling corn, and hauling it in. They made one load with the wagon. Roberta [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] came up from Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] to remain some days. Mr. Morgan stopped in for breakfast. he has just returned from the Saline and succeeded in obtaining for me 20 pounds of wool, for which I paid him 3½$ per pound. he left for home. Hicks ground 2 bushels of corn. Weather clear & warm. Ther: 84°.

Thursday, September 15th, 1864

To day the boys are at work planting turnip seeds & repairing the fence around the mill field. John is engaged in hauling rails from the King house. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp], children and myself drove down to Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] in the buggy & spent the day. upon our return we found Capt. Peacock who had just arrived from Liberty on his way to the Saline. Hicks ground 3 bushels of corn. Weather cloudy with showers of rain. Ther: 76°.

Monday, September 12th, 1864

To day the boys are engaged picking peas. I rode down with the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] after some muscadines and succeeded in getting a basket full. John arrived with the wagon from Huntsville all safe and sound. Mr. Morgan's wagon arrived when he left in route for the saline. I sent by him 20$ specie to purchase some wool if possible for the little woman. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 90°.

Sunday, September 11th, 1864

To day I left Mrs. Wyser's in company with Mr. Silas Morgan and rode 41 miles and arrived home. I found the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] and children all well. Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] was also at home having come up on Friday last. I also found Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] upon a visit. Mr. Morgan stopped with me for the night on his way to the saline after salt. Weather changeable and hot. Ther: 95°.

Monday, August 29th, 1864

To day Bill drove the little wagon down to the mill carrying Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire], the children & I. we all commenced cleaning the house & putting it in order to move back into. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] rode down in the evening. Nellie then rode down to Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] to stay some time. The little [woman], children & I returned home in the little wagon. John got back from the saline all safe bringing 1000 lbs of salt, equal to five sacks. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 95°.

Monday, August 22nd, 1864

To day Bill is at work thrashing out some wheat. I rode down to the mill and started John with his wagon & 3 yoke of oxen to the saline after salt. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] rode down to Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] and spent the day. Mr. Keen came over and bled my horse hawk. Weather clear and warm. Ther: 80°.

Sunday, August 21st, 1864

To day John is engaged in hunting up his steers to start to the saline. Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] came up and spent the day. Mrs. Keen came up in the evening & staid until night. Weather clear & hot. Ther: 80°.

Friday, October 10th, 1862

To day I remained at home. William Leaverton rode over to Mr. Richardson's in order to arrange the matter of dispute existing between him & Father in relation to a certain iron pot of his that Father had borrowed and which was accidentally broken while at the saline. I make this note in order to refresh my mind should a law suit grow out of the difference I being a witness to the whole transaction. James Beasley came over and remained nearly all day. William returned without affecting any compromise with Richardson. The little woman still improving. weather cloudy, with occasional showers of rain. The wind blowing fresh out of the North, rendering it very cold indeed so much so as to require fires for comfort.

Wednesday, September 24th, 1862

To day Father and the boys went out in hunt of a beef. Wm. Leaverton returned from the Saline, having left my little wagon on the road. I amused myself picking cotton. weather cloudy and rather hot with prospects of rain.

Tuesday, September 23rd, 1862

To day I loaned my little wagon to Father, and Wm. Leaverton started with it up to the saline after the pots left there. I amused myself picking cotton. weather changeable and hot.

Monday, September 8th, 1862

To day I remained at Father's where I am now boarding. I sent Bill and Bob to the shop and had the mules & 2 horses shod. Joe returned from the Saline with my little wagon. Nellie* is still quite sick, so much so as to require the aid of Dr. Murchison who visited her. weather changeable & hot with every indication of rain. [*This Nellie is a 2nd great-grandma to the Keeper of this blog.]

Saturday, September 6th, 1862

To day I sent to town for Mrs. Wrigley, who came out in the evening. I remained at Fathers all day. I loaned him my little wagon to go to the saline. weather changeable & hot but showery.

Thursday, September 4th, 1862

To day William Leaverton returned from Brody's and we went up to the Mill together to ascertain how things went on. We returned to Father's in the evening. Father returned from the Saline pretty well worn out. weather cloudy & hot with occasional showers of rain.

Tuesday, September 2nd, 1862

To day I went up to the mill with Roberta & Laura, and made Bill drive the little wagon down to Fathers, and there unloaded the iron and salt. I called on J.H. Leaverton and purchased from him some fodder. I returned to Father's and found that he had gone to the Saline. at night I was very sick and spent a disagreeable time being up & down all night. weather cloudy, rainy and rather cool.
