To day John is at work in the point field. Billy Stewart left for Crockett. I loaned him my compass & "Flint's" work on surveying. Hicks ground 9 bushels of wheat & 26 bushels of corn & 3 bushels of rye. Weather clear.

Thursday, March 23rd, 1865

To day Billy Stewart and Billy Roberts went out hunting and killed a fine turkey. Father [Joshua James Hall] & Mr. Crow spent the day with us. John worked in the field. Hicks ground 7 bushels of wheat & 12 bushels of corn. Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] rode down to Mothers [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] & spent the night with her. Weather clear and pleasant.

Tuesday, March 21st, 1865

To day Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] & I in company with Mr. Dailey rode to Crockett and put up with Billy Stewart. John worked in the field. Hicks ground 6 bushels of wheat & 4 bushels of corn. Weather clear & warm.

Thursday, March 16th, 1865

To day John is at work in the field. I worked on Mother's [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] loom. Hicks ground 34 bushels of corn. Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] drove my buggy & horse down to Mothers and brought little Jimmy [James Wrigley Hall] up home with her. he has been down there since Sunday last. Wm. Roberts came up & remained all night. Weather variable & pleasant.

Tuesday, March 14th, 1865

To day John is at work plowing in the point field. I am still at work on Mother's [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] loom. Hicks ground 1 bushel of wheat & 1 bushel of corn. at night Tom Neely & 5 other men attempted to assassinate me. The men who were with Neely were unknown to me. Weather variable and rather warm.

Monday, March 13th, 1865

To day John finished planting corn in the little field. Sam* Sharp left for the army. I commenced making a loom for Mother [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts]. Hicks ground 9 bushels of wheat. Weather cloudy and warm with occasional light drizzling showers of rain.

Wednesday, March 1st, 1865

To day John is engaged plowing in the little field & working in the garden. Hicks ground 8 bushels of wheat & 4 bushels of corn. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] rode down to Mothers [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] and Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] came up with her but did not remain long. Weather cloudy & cool with occassional showers of rain and a hard rain at night.

Wednesday, January 25th, 1865

To day the boys are at work in the lower field. I rode my horse Rob to Crockett and stopped with Billy Stewart. Hicks ground 10 bushels of corn. Weather changeable and cold, with a freeze at night.

Monday, January 23rd, 1865

To day the boys are at work in the lower field. J.C. Roberts & Lieut. Barlow left for Camp. Hicks ground 10 bushels of wheat & 12 bushels of corn. Five soldiers stopped for the night who are very shabby fellows to say the least of it. Weather clear & cold, with a hard freeze at night.

Friday, January 20th, 1865

To day the boys are at work in the lower field. James Collins left for Crockett. The guard is still at the mill. Hicks ground 12 bushels of wheat. at night I rode down to Hall's bluff in my buggy to attend a ball given by Capt. Stubblefield. I danced one Cotillion for which I paid 10$. this closed my dancing. Weather cloudy and cold with a hard frost at night.

Thursday, January 19th, 1865

To day the boys are still at work in the lower field. The guard is still at the mill. Dr. Murchison & R. Pennington spent the day with me. James Collins came out from Crockett & stopped with me for the night. Hicks ground 12 bushels of wheat. Weather cloudy and cool.

Wednesday, January 18th, 1865

To day the boys are at work in the lower field. The guard are still at the mill. Nellie* [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] is still down at Mother's [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts]. Hicks ground 10 bushels of wheat. Weather variable and cool.

To day the boys are at work in the bottom fields. I sent Mother [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] five bushels of potatoes and loaned her 24 lbs of cotton. Hicks ground 10 bushels of wheat. Weather cloudy and cold, with occasional showers of rain, and a hard rain throughout the night.

Friday, January 6th, 1865

To day the boys are at work in the bottom field. Hicks ground 13 bushels of wheat. I am engaged in making ? harness for Mother [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts]. At night the mill was broken open and two sacks of flour stolen out by the soldiers belonging to Hardeman's brigade. The two sacks weighed about 150 lbs. Weather cloudy & rather cool.

To day the boys are at work in the little field. Billy Stewart left for Crockett. The mill is engaged grinding for the Government and ground 10 bushels of wheat. Weather changeable & warm with a light shower of rain.

Monday, January 2nd, 1865

To day the boys are at work in the bottom splitting rails to reset the fence around the bottom field. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] is engaged weaving and wove one yard of linsey. Hicks ground 6 bushels of wheat. I sent Billy Stewart his negro woman America & her child Claudine who have been staying with me some time. Weather changeable and rather warm for the season.

Friday, October 21st, 1864

To day the boys are at work sowing Rye in the little field. Mrs. Bird spent the day with us. In the evening Father [Joshua James Hall], Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts], Burt [Roberta Downes Halyard nee Hall] & Toby [Horace Oscar Hall] came up on a visit. I made three surcingles for Mother, Florence [Florence Mahala Hall] went home with Mother and remained all night. Hicks ground 2 bushels of corn. Weather variable & cold, with a hard frost and freeze at night.

Thursday, October 20th, 1864

To day Bill is at work plowing the little field. Mother [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] came up and spent the day. Nellie [Mary Alexandrien Sharp nee Lemaire] rode home with her but did not remain long. I am better and work on a bridle. John had another chill and fever. Hicks ground one bushel of corn. Weather changeable and cold.
