Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Thursday, January 26th, 1865
To day I borrowed from Mr. Haden the sum of 25$ in specie and then left Crockett in Company with Dr. Murchison for home. I put my boy Bill in the service of the Government for the space of two months and 12 days to do work in the ? boat yard at Brookfield's bluff. Hicks ground 2½ bushels of wheat & 5 bushels of corn. Weather changeable & cold with a hard freeze at night.
