Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Monday, January 14th, 1861
To day it rained in perfect torrants, swelling the Elk Hart to its utmost capacity, and putting us in fear that the mill levy would again be washed away. towards evening however the wind hauled around to the North and the rain ceased. I concluded to tare down the old Machine shop, and commenced to remove the things out of it. Florence missed her fever, she has been for several days afflicted with the chills & fever which has greatly prostrated the dear little one, and I hope she may not have another attack of that horable disease. weather of course cloudy, and very cool.

Sunday, January 13th, 1861
To day Bill hauled wood and returned the oxen. Mother [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts] & Roberta [Hall] came up and remained for dinner, after which Mother went home and Roberta staid with us as company for the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp]. weather cloudy and rather warm, with occasional showers of rain.

To day I sent Bill down for the oxen to haul fire wood, he made 2 loads. Frank Stewart came up and went hunting. grinding small, only 2½ bushels. weather cloudy & cold.

To day I went up to the mill to see John Harwell & John Williams in relation to their working the mill for the year, but Williams could not agree to the requirements wanted and thus his claim or proposition was rejected. I remained for dinner and then went to Mothers [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts]. I loaned Father $8 in money. Weather cloudy & cold.

Tuesday, January 8th, 1861
To day I went in company with Father to Dailey's store, and from there to the election. there I met Richard Duglass, the Assessor & Collector, give in a list of property and paid him my taxes for the year 1860 and took his receipt for the same. I then went to the Mill in company with W. B. Lacy and Mr. Cunningham where we all dined. John Harwell then went to the election & I returned to Mothers [Mahala* Sharp Hall nee Roberts], where the little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] is still still staying, waiting favorable weather to carry Florence home. weather clear & warm.
