Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Sunday, October 20th, 1861
To day Sam Sharp with his wife, The little woman [Margaret] and Florence came down to Liberty safe & sound in my buggy from their long & protracted visit up the Country [in Houston County]. Frank Stewart with my little wagon & mules also arrived from the Mill. I was overjoyed at the little woman's return who had been absent about two months on a visit to her mother's. weather clear and quite pleasant.
