To day I sent my boy Hicks around the neighborhood in order to procure some hands to repair the mill levee. John came home from Corley's gin, with another load of cotton 7 bales. immediately upon his arrival one of my best oxen in the team (Roland) died. I suppose from being overheated. so misfortune never comes singly. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp], children & myself drove in the buggy down to Mothers [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] where we spent the day. weather changeable & hot. Ther: 86°.
Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.
