Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Thursday, June 18th, 1863
To day the boys are still at work chopping out the bottom field. Sam [Samuel Houston Sharp] rode up to Mrs. Beasley's and finished weighing the cotton that I had purchased from her which amounted to 20,000 lbs. in the seed. John came home from the shop with the wagon all well mended & in complete running order. Dr. Keen came over & spent the day. we went fishing & had very good luck. I ground 6½ bushels of corn. weather clear & hot. Ther: 87°.
