Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Monday, November 14th, 1864
To day the boys are at work hauling wood. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp], Pet [Florence Mahala Hall] & I drove down to Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] in her buggy and spent the day. I loaned my little wagon & mules to Mr. Keen to go to Barn's prairie after pecans. Hicks ground 20 bushels of corn & 2½ bushels of wheat. Mother got 19 lbs of cotton which makes a bale of 500 lbs and 5 lbs towards another. cloudy with occasional showers of rain.
