To day I drove up town in company with Col. Jim Wrigley and while there I purchased on a credit from Mr. James ? 55 lbs. of bacon for which I owe him $7.30. I then drove over and locked up Mrs. Beale's house [Elizabeth Lemaire Beale nee Waring]*. I then drove down to the warehouse and brought home the balance of the corn named in yesterday's notes. Susan, Mrs. Beal's negro woman, who occupied her house, having refused to to to Mrs. Beale in accordance with her written contract. I sent her adrift. Weather variable and hot with a very hard rain in the afternoon. Ther: 84°.

Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.
