Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Wednesday, March 13th, 1861
To day we left Crockett in the buggy and drove to Dan Dailey's 15 miles, arriving there in the hardest rain perhaps that ever befel a poor devil to be caught in and also a severe north wind blowing that seemed as though it would cut one into. We were compelled to remain all night in consequence of the continued rain and cold. expenses on this day one dollar.
