Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.

Thursday, December 11th, 1862
To day I am engaged in the ware house breaking out and shipping freight by the cars to Messrs. Murphy & Sanderson at Houston. My old friend Murphy left on the cars for his house also at Houston. I went up town and there learned that my roan horse Ratler which had been stolen on Tuesday night last was left at the residence of James Rodgers on the Trinity River. I then dispatched Bob after him, who returned at night with my horse. weather cloudy and warm with occasional showers of rain.
