To day the boys are at work hauling wood. The little woman [Margaret Hall Stewart nee Sharp] rode down to Mother's [Mahala Sharp Hall nee Roberts] to see her cousin John Connelly who has just returned from the Army. he reports that Capt. Vontress was killed on the 17th inst. by lightning as well as the horse upon which he was riding while bearing a dispatch from his general officer he was acting at the time as aid de campe. I finished the warping bars for the little woman. Mr. Byers of Liberty County stopped with me for the night. He is on his way to the wheat region. Weather clear and warm. Ther: 86°.
Thus closes my notes for the month of December and also for the year just passed and gone and now numbered with the things that were. Whether the Almighty will spare me to chronicle the daily events of the incoming year is more than I know but trusting in Him I shall enter upon the pleasing task, which is useful as a reference and may be profitable to those who have an interest in me.
